The car scene with Francis McDormand? That's widely considered one of the best scenes of all time. It's really effective at showing how idiotic and selfish humans can be when she lectures him on how its a beautiful day.

that, i believe, is the 2nd-to-last scene, and while I love the movie and consider it brilliant examples of both writing and directing, it is far from my favorite scene in the film. i find that margie comes across too preachy.

Marge looks at him.

MARGE

NORM

Yah.

Marge looks at him, waiting for more, but Norm's eyes stay

fixed on the television.

MARGE

... So?

NORM

Three-cent stamp.

MARGE

Your mallard?

NORM

Yah.

MARGE

Norm, that's terrific!

Norm tries to suppress a smile of pleasure.

NORM

It's just the three cent.

MARGE

It's terrific!

NORM

Hautman's blue-winged teal got the

twenty-nine cent. People don't

much use the three-cent.

MARGE

Oh, for Pete's - a course they do!

Every time they raise the darned

postage, people need the little

stamps!

NORM

one thing that always bothered me about this scene (aside from frances macdormand coming across as too preachy) is that gunnar (or whatever his name is) shows signs of remorse.

seems out of character, as he's a complete sociopath throughout.

Norm is incredibly naive & simplistic. all that matters to him is the stamp contest. (i'd argue the coens made it a stamp contest because stamp hobbies are often used in tv/movies as a symbol of mundanity.)

Contrast this with Margie, who is incredibly observant (she's a detective after all) and deals with crime and action as part of her occupation.

In the last scene, Margie knows that she is bringing a child into a cruel, violent world and she won't be able to protect the child at all times anymore. (and, indeed, the child may very well be haunted by the same sense of hyper awareness she possesses -- reminiscent of the ben folds' song "still fighting it.")
