Lib here, but I think pointing out that nearly all recent mass murders were over 21 or under 18!should at least demonstrate this age thing is a straw man.
Either ban the gun or the restrict access to the gun. But looking at age is a pointless half measure

Mental Health checks/a better mental health system isn't a bad idea - that is one area where I think the government could get back to where it was in the Pre-Regan with these institutionalization situations with the crazies.
I think in the case of Sandy Hook and this one both of the kids were on antipsychotics or pills of some sort, same with that piece of shit in Charleston who killed all those church ladies.
For example the fact the media does not admit is that the Sandy Hook guy's mom was to blame - she was the gun nut in the family and obviously her son had significant issues that should have made her worry - at least enough to have her weaponry not be accessible to her son.
As to the utility of banning guns in response to the crimes of these insane people? I don't think that it is really useful.
As for this current shooter IDK what the situation was, because I am pretty disengaged from news media but I read that his mom died pretty recently. I think a combo of a mental illness, medication history and a traumatic life event should require an individual under 18 or 21 to wait longer than the normal period to purchase a firearm.
The call for gun bans in response to these people (mentally ill, uninvolved parents) is not really getting to the issue at heart: Mental Illness not dealt with by parents due to absence or negligence.
FWIW in Ancient China and Japan if you had your kids do some really bad crimes, they would come for you - your parents and sometimes even your aunts/uncles and cousins - this family liability has a strong deterrent effect - even though it would be unconstitutional here the concept is still powerful: people need to have a community awareness and involvement
