A few 50+ year old downtown guys live in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized apartments. They're retired from sort of physical labor or city job, collecting disability, social security, and pensions. They're entitled to a 5-figure annual housing subsidy through a combination of luck and accepting the risk of living in downtown NYC in the '70s or '80s. This combo might look pretty good to a divorced/widowed uptown girl who is high on class, low on annual cash flow. |
