No, I recall it distinctly arising out of IFNB threading. Back then there was a strong contingent of poasters, myself included, who strongly suspected the IFNB was gay. But Halford knew they were straight as fuck and so used the mashup of "clothed body builders" and "homos" to teach us that it was the clothmos who were gay.

It's not pumo related in origin.

you really must not have been paying attention to think IFNB was gay. Even before Halford laid down the STRAIGHT TALK about nude lifting, we had discussed how bros helping bros in the gym was 100% hetero. And if you think about it, IFNB is just bros helping bros writ LARGE.

Comes from HOMO. As kids in the 80s and 90s we’d call people ‘mo, just like 4chan calls people fags and even uses fag as a suffix, eg. newfag.

Pretty sure you can find ‘mo in Brett Easton Ellis books.

Similarly the IFNB creator was calling clothmos homos who wear clothes.

You’re beyond wrong. It came from “pumo”

No, totally different mo. That's punctuation moniker. Nothing to do with clothmos.

people have been using 'mo as a shortened form of homo for decades. But adding it as a suffix to other nouns wasn't something I've encountered IRL prior to this bort.

i also never saw it before this board and believe it was the work of IFNB. I am just pointing out that it most certainly is a portmanteau of clothing-homo. And likely a linguistic relative of 00s boards like /b/ using -fag as a suffix

I'm confident it's because of the abridging of "punctuation moniker" (in the wake of the lolsuit) to "pumo." as "pumo" entered the lexicon, the -mo ending became a familiar recital that naturally became appended to words unrelated to "moniker"

"clothmo" probably was the second breakout iteration; it may just have synergy with "homo" rather than be borne from it

This is the correct etymology.

It was followed by quotemo and then the other mos started popping up later. Clothmo didn't come along for awhile.

No, completely wrong. The leap from words ending in -mo occured when Halford made it into a slur against clothed bodybuilders.

tbh i think it's a product of xo's autist pattern recognition abilities

first u had pumo, then came the unrelated clothmo from halford, then all u need is one poaster to riff on either of the above with the suffix "mo" for a couple more poasters to put the three items together as enough to indicate a new linguistic concept where "mo" denotes group association, then they do the same and make their own riffs out of convenience, a couple more poasters catch on and all of a sudden u have the whole herd of autists squawking in unison bc they get the pattern

This. Actually, I think this is the source of our disagreement. During the E.H.E. (Early Halford Era), pumo was a much bigger slur than it is today. By the time Halford delivered the light of the IFNB, quotemo was already present and was particularly embodied by a nasty version of a pumo. It was Lord Halford who recognized that clothed bodybuilders were just as suspiciously pernicious as pumos. He thusly declared clothed bodybuilders "clothmos" and began the P.H.E. (Post Halford Era). As -mos began to propagate into Trumpmos, Outsidemos, etc. the original slur of pumo began to lose its effect. -Mo went from a word of abuse to a neutral descriptor of a type of person. Only clothmos retain the original ignominy.
