Downsides are no/little name brand. Don't have 1000-2000 colleagues around the world who do everything imaginable; we often have to fudge things a bit or pull in another firm if there's something beyond what we can do (regulatory, occasionally tax, HSR, even corp gov advice once during a really dicey deal) -- it used to be nice to pick up the phone and call some expert in DC or London at the same firm. Support/word processing and IT is piss poor compared with a big firm -- really almost nonexistent. Small size amplifies the impact of a few quirky people.

I did a summer for a big firm. I realized day one that everyone there hated their lives and were miserable. I routinely showed up at 10am and left at 4:30pm every day, attended 2 of the 10 summer associate events, and maxed out my $50/lunch budget pretty much every day. I was just there to collect my 3k per week. They obviously no offered me, which I couldn't have cared less about.

Also, if you are able to save a little money and buy your own place, it gets more bearable (I am in secondary market, so this was possible). The stress is fucking insane when you are working 20 hour days and getting chewed out and having weekend trips blown up, but you need the job to eat and go back every night to your shitty apartment. Once you have like 12 months of living expenses saved up in liquid assets and get yourself into a comfortable living situation, it’s much easier to keep perspective and let shit roll off your back.
