Basically there is no correlation between gun ownership and gun violence. There is one data point. The US has high gun ownership and high gun violence. There are many MANY variables that contribute to gun violence a lot more than gun ownership.

Imagine two scenarios:
(A) Gun are legal. I could pick 50 friends and we could each buy 10 AR-15's and keep them in our houses. That's 500 new guns owned by 50 people.
(B) All purchases of new semi auto weapons are banned. Not just "assault weapons", but rifles and hand guns too. But existing guns in circulation are not confiscated. They cannot be bought or sold legally. Instead of me and 50 friends buying 10 guns, I pick 20 inner city black young men at random, sight unseen, and clone them and put them back into society. Not just criminals, 20 kids from inner city Chicago or St Louis at random. They cannot obtain any guns legally.
On a marginal basis scenario B will lead to more gun violence than scenario A.
Poverty and race leads to violent crime, and violent crime when guns happen to be around leads to gun homicides.
Obviously if all guns were confiscated there would be no gun crime, but this weakens arguments that tightening restrictions on legal gun ownership is what is needed to combat gun violence. |
