People always make fun of high school history as being boring and dry and it is a little. But I think kids need to have a common narrative about their story as Americans. And although it shouldn't be a whitewash, it shouldn't focus on the negative shit either. The theme of the story is that we are a special nation that had its problems (slavery, civil war) but rose above those to become great. Throw in melting pot shit, etc. too. If anyone has ever heard about the Whig version of British history, that is the type of history that American high school students should learn about the US. If they want to focus on (as opposed to just have referenced) how women were oppressed and how we suck because blacks were treated poorly, etc. they can learn that stuff on their own time or in college. |
