don't think about each account as its own portfolio. treat all your liquid financial assets dedicated to retirement as one whole portfolio with a target allocation.

what does your current portfolio as a whole look like? i'd target something like 60/40 us-foreign total stock market index funds. if you're lazy you can just throw everything into vti.

target net worth is a bit deceptive b/c of student loans. target income seems more reasonable at least until you get older and are nearing retirement.

25 - 50K

30 - 80k

35 - 120k

40 - 150k

45 - 180k

50 - net worth, $1 million

a lot of it is from crypto sales i'd made over the past few months.

i have more cash that's not included in that portfolio that's still on gdax for trading.

my strategy is based on trend following and momentum in broad equity indexes.

you should not listen to anything tsinah has to say about crypto or investing.

crypto is far more volatile than anything else you own. the tricky thing is that if you do a lump sum you can fall into some nasty psychological traps because there is a really really good chance the market will rip against you.

i would drop $10k into btc/eth and simply observe your emotional reactions to the fluctuations first.

however, if you're looking for a "good" entry point i think eth at 300 and btc at 4000 is decent but the price may never get there.

crypto has a very high chance of disappearing. there are plenty of unknown unknowns. for all we know someone could have found a fundamental flaw in btc/eth that they've been exploiting for years and the flaw only just comes to light. that would destroy the market.

think about the odds of crypto 1) being around 5 years from now and 2) being established enough that institutions and retail investors start allocating a small portion of their portfolios to it. if that happens, crypto's market cap could easily exceed $1 trillion on a sustainable basis. most of that value, however, will likely be captured by a handful of coins (some that may not exist today) and most current coins will go to 0. depending on your estimate of those odds, you could justify allocating nothing to a lot of your net worth to crypto on a kelly criterion basis.

when it comes to saving money most people have their priorities fucked up. they should be spending a LOT of time figuring out the best way to reduce their big ticket expenses, particularly rent/mortgage, and that means spending a lot of effort on getting the best deal possible up front. instead people focus their money saving efforts on scrounging a few bucks here and there with coupons, etc.

also, use camelcamelcamel's chrome extension to look at the price history of products you regularly buy on amazon. set some price alerts for when the price drops around the level of previous sales. could save you tons of money with little effort.

yes. i think eth has a good chance of supplanting btc as the premier store of value in crypto. there are so many apps being developed on ethereum that you're exposed to a lot of upside potential if one of those apps really takes off (or even better if the whole ecosystem takes off).

depends on your income and goals.

but in priority for retirement saving:

1) hsa is almost always a good deal if you're eligible for one.

2) traditional ira if you expect your marginal income rate in retirement to be lower than your marginal rate today. otherwise roth (backdoor if you're eligible).

(bonus): if your 401(k) allows "after-tax" contributions that are distinct from roth contributions--this is called a "mega" backdoor roth.

3) taxable account. if you buy equity index funds and don't intend to make lots of trades it can be extremely tax efficient.

yeah you can contribute to a roth and traditional in the same year splitting the 5500 limit but it's almost never a good idea.

just max out your hsa and treat it like a roth. yeah, you can use it for medical expenses but i don't recommend it.

Which of these has the highest expected value on 1/1/2021? I don't need the money now.

A. Selling my ETH today and paying short term cap gains rates. (It's still up 3 or 4x since my average buy.) Buying VTI with those winnings.

B. Selling my ETH in July after long term cap gains rates applies to all of it. Buying VTI with those winnings.

C. Leaving it all in ETH.

TYIA.

C by far

however it doesn't mean it's the optimal strategy for you. you could do a combination of all 3 depending on how big ETH is as a portion of your net worth and your risk aversion.

I read Investor's Manifesto which you rec'd - seemed like Bernstein was was very big on minimizing fees.

the advantage a competent advisor will give you is mostly in making sure you don't make stupid mistakes in taxes, asset allocation, tax location, etc. if you hire an exceptional manager you may be able to find someone who can outperform after fees but i think those advisors are maybe 1-in-a-100. i think i can actually generate some alpha after fees and taxes (and have so far) but i charge such outrageously low fees that i'm practically giving away my services.

from what i've seen even reasonably smart and educated people can make stupid errors in investing. i've seen nutella, earl et al do some dumb things and i'm pretty sure they would've been better off paying me instead of going it alone.

I've honestly kind of lost the plot on tezos. We're bullish on it as a platform vs other new "blockchain 3.0" things because of huge warchest, safer smart contracts (formal verification), and breitman's competence as a developer, right? It only seems to really rise above others on the warchest. Zilliqa (which you're also bullish on) has their contract language that should be similarly safe contracts (also formally verified), for example

for traditional financial stuff, maybe. my fee is asset-based, max at 0.5% for small accounts, and drops precipitously for large accounts. for example, i have a $20 million client who pays about 0.2% per year.

i've taken on completely new clients. it's really case by case.

i don't try to make prospects comfortable. i just explain my structure, fees, process, limitations as thoroughly and honestly as i can.

i wouldn't do it for $100k unless there was a strong possibility of a $1 million+ allocation eventually. however i offer personal advice/analysis quite freely and i often given detailed comments to friends/family that ask for it.
