It’s just sitting in a room with stacks of case files you have no time to prep; having PDs & defense attorneys approaching you from every angle to discuss “their” cases; having judges who just want to end their shifts; & you having to interview victims & witnesses, who all want to go to trial, which is completely unfeasible. It’s just a barrage of negotiations & trying to manage unmanageable caseloads. Oh, & encountering hallways piled with blacks who show up late and are complaining about how long everything is taking. They all know each other, too.
Worst part is getting paid absolute shit for the hassles. Where I got hired they were only hiring new hires “part-time,” paying 29 hours per week with no benefits but demanding full time work. All the Boomer DAs who had been there forever were constantly taking vacations & sticking the young “part timers” with extra work. |

It would have been a better experience with full-time pay & benefits, & if my bosses didn’t change to women who cared more about desk time than work product (or who at least would let the “part-timers” leave early when their court calendars were complete). |

You're a shit writer, you're a doofus in court, you sweat everything like a bitch, etc. You're really only qualified to fill out paperwork and stammer your way through misdemeanor continuances and 1.5 day trials in front of six people. Or better yet infractions and locking up homeless trespassers for three days after a rigorous 80 second long negotiation with Peter the Public Defender before your muni court calendar.
It's widely known those jobs are a grind where lazy old civil servants ride on the back of naive young strivers. I just don't know why you were disappointed or angry that it sucked. And complaining about having a big caseload? C'mon man. Points well taken about how aggravating senior status boomers are or the pain of no benefits. That is rotten. But your complaints seem to outpace grievance over compensation and not loving your bosses. |

Otherwise, the only adversarial legal arguments I made before judges (in person) were in motion hearings & bail hearings. They had a separate unit devoted to brief writing, butI did become a go-to for writing motions & responding to motions to suppress. In shitlaw I wrote a couple of big appellate briefs. One triggered a major statutory change. |
