I'm getting private consulting from a bunch of card churning friends on how to stockpile points. What I'll probably try to get from FlyerTalk is advice on transfering points to airline or hotel rewards programs efficiently.

right now it looks like Korean Air to SE Asia and then Malaysia Airlines between places in SE Asia is lowest price in $$$. I hear Korean Air is very good program to transfer points to.

I don't know about ALL times but they have a rep for being wide open in F and every flight i've checked, even the extremely popular day after XMAS departure had multiple F seats open for the JFK-ICN direct. I'm on KE in Sept. HKG-ICN-JFK, can report better after that.

Shit, I just looked it up on their website and you're right. 150,000 points for round trip "prestige class" for both me and my wife.

I can run up 150,000 points in a year and a half

you have to use them on asian carriers (including middle east). all european and north american carriers are fraud.

ggtp convinced me in the doc review thread that i have to move to one of these countries. it's like US in the 50s-90s over there.

SE asia is the last place in the world where you need to plan anything. we just showed up with a one way to BKK and nothing else booked. looking back, wouldn't have done it any other way

if you're traveling solo with a backpack, i'd just get on a GrabBike. way faster and probably just as cheap

Grab is basically the Uber of SE Asia

Traveling with wife, each of us will have one carry-on plus 20kg checked luggage

20kg is the checked luggage max weight of the most restrictive airline we plan to fly on the entire trip

get a grabcar/grabtaxi once you get off airline link at phayathai (or whatever). with the both of you, grab is gonna work itself out to be faster and cheaper almost every time. they have good discounts for your first couple rides too.

i highly suggest going to or staying in ekkamai and thong lor. only thais here, no farang. i stayed with my thai friend who lived in ekkamai and she showed us a seriously good time. bangkok ended up being my favourite part of the trip.

the traffic is bad but if you check on google maps, you'll see that it's equivalent to the time it'll take on BTS. i was like you and thought i'd use public transport the whole time, but being in an air conditioned car for an hour is way better than pushing yourself onto a crowded metro with 4 bags.

also, i know you travel differently, but do you really need all that stuff without your kid in tow? i would struggle to pack more than 10kg in a warm weather destination. and leave some room for souvenirs (i would buy these all in chiang mai)
