mostly what was expected. counties in texas and the southwest growing rapidly. counties in the northeast growing slowly. brooklyn had a slight population loss, and NYC's new population of 8,622,698 is a modest percentage increase over its 2016 estimate.

what's kind of interesting are the fastest-growing metro areas in percentage terms. remember that the census's county-based metro areas tend to be over-broad and not always very accurate for trying to figure out the population of an URBAN area, but high growth at the county level is still noteworthy:

Table 8

Top 10 Fastest-Growing Metropolitan Areas (Percentage Increase): 2016-2017

2017 Rank - 2016 Rank - Metropolitan Area - 2017 Population - 2016 Population - Percent Change

1. - 9. - St. George, UT - 165,662 - 159,237 - 4.0%

2. - 2. - Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC-NC - 464,165 - 447,793 - 3.7%

3. - 4. - Greeley, CO - 304,633 - 294,243 - 3.5%

4. - 3. - Bend-Redmond, OR - 186,875 - 180,675 - 3.4%

5. - 15. - Coeur d’Alene, ID - 157,637 - 153,144 - 2.9%

6. - 10. - Lakeland-Winter Haven, FL - 686,483 - 667,018 - 2.9%

7. - 17. - Boise City, ID - 709,845 - 690,810 - 2.8%

8. - 7. - Provo-Orem, UT - 617,675 - 601,478 - 2.7%

9. - 8. - Austin-Round Rock, TX - 2,115,827 - 2,060,558 - 2.7%

10. - 1. - The Villages, FL - 125,165 - 122,121 - 2.5%

these areas are mainly growing due to "net domestic migration," ie, people moving in from other parts of the country, rather than international migrants. the interior west (and that includes bend in oregon) is growing pretty explosively these days.

puerto rico's population dropped by 100K to 3.3 million, but these estimates are for july 1, and the hurricane wasn't until late september, so the big population collapse won't be reflected until next year's estimates.

also interesting that the estimate for the dallas-ft. worth metro area is 7.4 million, which is extremely close to the toronto area's 2016 estimate of 7,414,700. additionally, while LA county and NYC's counties both saw modest gains, cook country (chicago area) saw a drop, along with baltimore city/county. STL has dropped to 308,000, which means its deliriously-high murder rate keeps getting worse in per capita terms.

finally, contrary to the past 25 years or so, ALASKA is losing population, with the anchorage area shrinking by a few thousand.

the city population is actually the lowest it has been since the late-1860's. its 1870 census population was almost 311,000. the overall metro area has been flat for a while, too.
