But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

I get that it doesn't say Thomas actually touched him with his hand, but it's implied.

no there are late insertions with crap supposed to be "sciency-like" for the time articulating that he did come back in a real body etc. Doubting Thomas stuff, same w later insertions and fraud on the Pauline letters.

Yeah my argument is that it may have been a real body, not the one that was crucified, and that the mind controlling that body was Jesus's mind in a slew of relevant properties, but that the bible is not authoritative that you must believe Jesus's dead body stopped being dead and started living again, like a scene from ER where someone is resuscitated.

and don't forget the message of 1 Corinthians 15:

12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. 15 In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.

16 For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men.

so then what's the deal with the general resurrection of the dead?

that doctrine seems to be very widely ignored these days even among otherwise conservative christians.

There's a tension between that doctrine and popular notions of heaven and hell. Bros like Luther thought that a dead person slumbered in unconsciousness until the resurrection.

Greek conceptions of the soul and afterlife undeniably had an impact on Church doctrine, even though there is no "scriptural" basis for them.

If the church had rigidly adhered to what scripture suggests about the afterlife, it wouldn't have become the Church. Most people want to believe the afterlife is a lot like their current lives--they don't want to think too much about passages like Mark 12:18–27.

i'm not even talking about scriptural basis here, i'm talking about the absolutely massive gap between what your average American Catholic believes and what the Catechism has to say
