2. Universal background checks for ammunition sales. Sounds dumb but more effective than many other options. Legitimate users can get a license to buy ammunition that's good for three-years, and can be suspended upon conviction or other disqualification.
3. Computerize ATF gun records. No reason why we force the ATF to use paper.
4. Red flag laws. Family members or law enforcement can petition a court to take guns away from a person who is nuts.
5. Take guns away from violent criminals. Federal law only bans violent criminals from buying more guns but doesn't seize their current guns.
6. Ban violent criminals from buying guns. Federal law currently bans felons from buying guns. But those convicted of violent misdemeanors are seven times more likely to commit crimes after buying a gun.
7. Stop drug-users and alcoholics from buying guns. You can put a minimum such as two or three DUIs or drug crimes but we don't need cholos buying guns. |

A real compromise would be trading nationwide carry conceal for universal background checks, waiting periods and the other shit you suggest, most of which is fine.
Basically you have to accept private gun ownership throughout the country before we accept national gun control. |

we want to make getting guns more difficult than it is now. it should be at least as difficult to become a licensed gun owner as it is to become a licensed driver. we also want to ban high capacity magazines and heavily restrict military-style rifles.
however, the ultimate end game is to continue to develop non-lethal weapons to the point that there's no longer a strong argument for lethal weapons.
i'm a gun owning lib who goes to the range regularly. where i differ from reptiles is that i don't *like* owning rifles. i feel like i have to own them because other people own them. but i would be fine if they were banned tomorrow. i dont think hand guns should be outright banned but i do think it should be a local issue. i don't think the 14th amendment was intended to make the 2nd amendment applicable to the states and bar state governments from deciding what level of gun control they need. the 2nd amendment was mean to protect the states and the people from an oppressive federal government. there's no reason the people of illinois shouldn't be able to decide that gun ownership should be restricted in order to address violent crime epidemics, just as there's no reason Texas shouldn't be able to include a right to gun ownership in its state constitution.

Liberals have the exact same attitude with guns. They would like to confiscate all guns, but will settle for making it as difficult as possible to legally own guns.
By the way, it's worth noting that liberals want American to be an "evolved, worldly state" and see red-blooded conservatives (and perhaps racism) as being the sole impediment to that goal. They look at "evolved, worldly states" around the world - see that guns are outlawed - and feel that America is inferior because it does not have the same policies. |
