the crux of corporate finance is taking raw data and drawing insights from it to present to leadership.

An analyst wouldn’t do this but manager level and above typically lead presentations in front of executives, etc. You kinda have to know your shit at these meetings. Being a no-nonsense alpha helps.

The shitty thing about corp finance is you have to work extremely hard and you don’t get paid much at the lower levels.

The best thing about it is you really come to know and understand the whole business unlike other areas which are almost always siloed.

The expectations for work product are higher now. Excel skills have become more commodified (but a good excel guy is worth his weight in gold), there are a ton of data visualization tools (tableau, etc) and other software that you need to master concurrently.

The faggot vp will demand a ton of work from analysts for what amounts to ???? Because nobody knows what strategy people even do.

VP for Strategy may be in an entirely separate group/line of authority without any direct relationship to financial analysts.

I have worked in strategy for two big companies and neither had financial analysts reporting up through strategy. They both had them in FP&A.

Gathering a bunch of data and putting it into NPV models, collecting costs from different parts of company and coming up with five, ten year budgets and constantly having meetings to cut and cut and cut more

I'm sure they do but it never seems to comes up on this board. And in general it seems like law firms are bad at pricing so lack guidance.

it's not a super complicated business so they probably don't need that many of them or pay them all that much.

I'd imagine a typical firm with 1 or 2 thousand lawyers could use more of a corporate headquarters than what exists now.

From what I've seen on WSO (wallstreetoasis.com) acctg is preferred over fin. for F500 corp. fin. For Wall Street there seems to be no consensus. Some of the "targeted" schools don't even have an undergrad business program at all, and the firms provide paid training.

It's used as a catch-all title for anything related to finance or accounting.

This article does a decent job of summarizing the main types: https://www.mergersandinquisitions.com/corporate-finance-jobs/

Is there a distinction between a "financial analyst" and an "accountant"? In the context of a F500 company.
