The grandfather of a dead teenage robber criticized an Oklahoma man for using an AR-15 to defend himself against the group of burglars Friday.

Leroy Schumacher, the grandfather, said there was no reason his grandson had to die over the attempted robbery, reports KTUL.

“What these three boys did was stupid,” Schumacher told KTUL. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”

Jacob Redfearn, his grandson, and two other teens, Maxwell Cook and Jake Woodruff , were fatally shot by Zach Peters when they broke into Peters’ home on March 27. Armed with an AR-15, Peters shot all three of the would-be robbers.

Wagoner County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to find all three teenagers dead. Police recovered a knife and brass knuckles on the bodies.

Schumacher said it was unfair for Peters to shoot at the robbers because they only had brass knuckles on them. “Brass knuckles against an AR-15, come on, who was afraid for their life,” Schumacher went on.

Schumacher protested that Peters hasn’t been charged for shooting at his grandson and the other potential burglars. Schumacher believes people have a right to protect their homes, but they shouldn’t kill people who break into them.

“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them; there was no need for that,” Schumacher said. “These boys’ families are going to suffer with this for the rest of their lives. We have to live with this for the rest of our lives.”

Deputies said the shooting looks like it was in self-defense, but they will be investigating just to be sure.

“It looks like self-defense from the preliminary investigation, but that’s all speculative,” Wagoner County Deputy Nick Mahoney said. “There’s some speculation as to whether or not that (Stand Your Ground) law applies in this case, the simple answer is I don’t know.”

This is yet another reason why libs trying to ban all guns would have disastrous consequences. If law-abiding citizens were truly defenseless, then a group of three people breaking into a home with even just knives (let alone illegally obtained guns) would easily be able to overpower the occupants. We live in a better society thanks to pest control like this.

It also eliminates gamesmanship. Three guys rob a gas station together and one shoots the clerk. All three stay quiet or, alternatively, blame the other two. There's no forensics. Without felony murder, all three get off on reasonable doubt. With felony murder, it doesn't matter which one pulled the trigger so they can all hai to jail.

I am completely fine with sending murderers to jail for life with no or very little possibility of parole. It's not worth the time or effort to rehabilitate them (if they even can be) and we can't in good conscience let them back out and ask the citizenry to absorb the risk they will murder again. The getaway driver in this vehicle isn't like that; she hasn't crossed the line whereby she decided to take a human life and, depending on how she acts, I'd be fine with her getting out some day.

Similarly, with the three bros who robbed a store together: The guy who made the decision to murder a clerk should spend the rest of his life in jail. The other two? Well, maybe. It depends.
