Check out Caro's book on Robert Moses. Fucking fascinating shit on how NY (and the US) developed. Post-war suburbanization was this slow-moving trainwreck that many planners saw but couldn't do anything about.

Also, air quality is cities sucks.

I think it’s been mentioned, but many cities had large swaths taken over by blacks so that if you had a family and wanted your kids to go to decent schools you had no choice but to move to a suburb. At least in rust belt cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, this is very much the case, don’t think you can blame GC here.

The origins of modern suburbanization trace back to a literal conspiracy among multinational corporations (tire/rubber companies, oil companies, car manufacturers) to destroy public transportation ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy ) which then pushed for investment, policies, laws, etc. that favored use of oil, cars, etc.

Cool story bro. So you're reducing the discussion to what you personally want to do at this particular moment in time. I guess I'm supposed to ignore the fact that you're a lackey lawyer who brags about his salary on the internet and really likes to collect Jeep Grand Cherokees. I already know that you're materialistic and dull so why would I care what you have to say about this?

Do you also complain about housing prices? Can't really have it both ways.

People enjoy having space and safety. Get over it shitlib. I know it's hard for you to comprehend but not everyone enjoys living around poors and freaks in a 400 s/f box.

Also, it's not like people wouldn't like to be in the city. It's just not affordable to have a decent place to live with good schools.

This dichotomy you present is only the case because of the error of suburbanization. If we went a different route then urban (and rural) living could have been different.

I've lived in both cities and suburbs and suburbs have far higher QOL. Just more outdoor space, can go hiking much more easily, just sit out back and have a BBQ, etc., living in a HOUSE is much nicer than living in an apt.

Sorry, but if you prefer living in a city you're either a billionaire like Trump who can afford to buy lots of space or a man-shrew obsessed with GC.

I live in NYC now - most commercial spaces have been taken over by large public companies, because rental prices are obscene. No more mom and pop shops can afford new leases - once their old leases expire, they go out of business. NYC is far more "GC" than pretty much anywhere else I have lived. Family owned businesses can at least afford the rent in the suburbs - the suburbs are far more friendly to entrepreneurship that large cities these days.

Cities are populated mainly because there's a higher concentration of certain types of jobs in cities. This is directly correlated to GC. Nobody would want to live in a commune like a city if jobs were available in the suburbs or more rural areas.

There's nothing wrong with valuing space and having more land. I find that wanting to buy more land in the suburbs is less GC than other forms of consumption that you'd find in cities. Having more land means that you are buying unaltered space/earth as opposed to something manufactured and a direct product of GC.

Have you not been to Soho or walked down Broadway? It's far more GC than that picture.

NYC of the 1970s no longer exists - now NYC is the most GC city in America. It's sad, but it's a city in GC decline and only shrews and billionaires want to live here for the long term.

Because I know you prefer cities to suburbs (and are more critical of suburbs than cities for some reason), and there aren't a lot of options for modern day Americans. If rural living were an option for Americans, then I'd say that it is probably the best option.

Both suburbs and cities have their problems, but the fact is that cities are far more GC than suburbs and have the most problems compared to suburban or rural living. Suburbs provide access to land ownership, more space, access to modern jobs and serve as a compromise between urban and rural living.

With other modes of transportation (like horses), it could have been something similar, but on a smaller scale (fewer and smaller suburbs).

Suburbs aren't the only product of GC and I think it still offers more benefits in comparison to other products of GC (such as cities).

Frankly, we just need to impose a one or two child policy and we can solve a lot of problems related to over-consumption, etc.

We will never have a one-child policy because the suburbs need people to keep pumping out kids and buying shit at Walmart to survive. It is the only reason they exist. People who move to the suburbs don't care about their footprint, it's all about MY kids MY school district MY Land Rover MY property

Most of America isn't coastal urban elite cities though. There are plenty of places (see pretty much every single midwestern city) where you could live in the city at a good price with a reasonable amount of space but everything sprawled out regardless and the cities emptied.

It's the traffic problem people want to ignore. You can never build enough roads to keep up with the congestion, and the existing stock requires continual maintenance.

Yep. That's what the smart urban planners kept telling Robert Moses. He'd build a new bridge and a new highway connecting to it, he'd declare that our traffic problem would soon go away, traffic congestion would ease for about 3-4 months, then suddenly traffic would spike and be worse than ever. Cars are an inefficient way to transport people (few people per car and space that car takes up from parking). If you spend most of your money on roads then mass transit suffers and without mass transit you just get a sprawling network of roads, low-density development, and highways that are jam-packed.
