Newark NJ - murderous shithold, would only go to hockey/soccer games.

Dover DE is actually pretty by the Del. Supreme Court, but LJL at "vacationing" there.

Stockbridge MA is in the Berkshires and is actually decent if you are looking for a place with a slow pace of life. That's where summer stock is, Tanglewood, etc. Basically heaven on earth if you are a 60 year old beater volvo driving yo yo ma public radio canvas bag toting teva wearing lib.

Westerly is where watch hill is and near Fisher's island. They are fun but somewhat sleepy. Great places if you have $$$$ and connections though. And CT casinos are a short shot away.

Portsmouth NH is actually decent and has a few small art galleries. Would not spend more than half a day there, though. Portland ME and the NH lakes region are better.

Burlington is pretty chill, you can hit up a coffee shop with UVM students and buy some Patagonia camping shit.

BTW not present on this list--but should be added--are:

Hudson NY - quickly being taken over by hipsters but pretty chill downtown area. Easy to get to from the city.

Warwick RI - you can drive to Newport/Watch Hill etc. from there.

Amherst MA area - quaint towns, decent outdoors stuff, heaven on earth if you are a lesbian who drives a subaru with a kayak rack on it year-round

Brattleboro VT - Quaint small town, now has a pretty brewery/beer pub on the river, can take day trips to Manchester.

Saratoga Springs - when horse races are around.

Pittsfield MA - Has been cleaned up, decent base camp for exploring the berkshires and not having to spend a fortune.

I'm generally a skeptic of travel with kids. I'd say to enjoy KC, you need to have a taste for BBQ, which kids probably don't develop until a certain age. Being able to understand the horrors of war and segregation are important too, given that two major attractions are museums about war and segregation.

Buffalo has its okay places and they're more okay than they were 20 years ago, but I don't think there's enough to justify a trip. Not a terrible place to spend a weekend, I guess -- if you're there for a Bills game on Sun you could find enough to do Fri night - Sat night -- preferably before it starts snowing.

Whoever said Sunapee NH is right and I would add Conway NH (Red Jacket Inn) if you are interested in a base for exploring the White Mountains.

Also Ogunquit Maine. (Kennebunkport--especially the White Barn Inn--is great but $$$).

Again purpose of list is cheapo NE options, not balling out in ACK.
