Also, there is something called a "hospice home" where people who aren't doing as well at home can choose to go get symptom treatment while on hospice, a lot of these are really good with good staff, so consider this an option if there is one in your area. |

the subtext of "increase morphine because she's in pain" is "i understand and wish to kill her."
because the "just enough painkiller to make him comfortable" will kill him/her. everyone on the medical side knows this, but i've seen other people not realize it. this is why youre getting pushback or whatever: the request for "really alleviating the pain" is a de facto request for euthanasia. so if you dont understand why the nurses are hesitant, that is why. we dont have euthanasia laws everywhere and a lot of nurses aren't comfortable making that decision alone. you have to insist because it really is asking for death. so, as others have said, talk to real doctors about how you *really* want pain relief and all that it entails; dont blame nurses and other functionaries for not making her "comfortable." if youre man enough to ask for death then be man enough to not put it on some random nurse whos not authorized to euthanize. |

prior to monday she had never taken any prescription pain meds. starting monday late afternoon, she took abt 5 doses of .25ml morphine spaced about an hour apart, which is the hospice 'starter' dose for patients expected to live 1 month +
after this thread, i called over a hospice nurse and badgered them to come over and urged for a dosage boost. they moved it up to .5ml. i was advocating for them to go straight to the 1ml "max" (im sure they go over this at hospice facilities for patients they consider to be actually 'near' death and are trying to kill). she died after 2 of those those .5ml doses, spaced an hour apart.
so, yes, my aim was absolutely to hasten her demise. unclear to me whether the amt she took accomplished that. but maybe others know more abt this |

Here is the deal, when I am about to die, and the choice is a few more hours of spaced-out unconscious pain vs. son giving me morphine to let me go quietly into the light -- I hope I have raised my son well enough to give me peace.
I have struggled with the decision I made for my dad for years. We all die. Some die horrible deaths. Some die gracefully. You gave your mother grace. Be proud. It wasn't you making the decision, it was her.
Edit: Sorry for your loss. Nothing is the same... at least for a long time. Find joy in the process of grief. You will understand when you see it in front of you and feel guilty for trying to grasp it. |
