The longer I know people, even people I consider to be reasonably intelligent, the more I notice that they usually are permafucked/cursed. In other words, they can never seem to find success in life because of some (significant) flaw holding them back...whether it's being awkward, lacking hustle, making irrational decisions, etc. Has anyone else noticed this?

A random example I thought of that was seen as such a miracle that it became a movie: Will Smith in Pursuit of Happiness. Dude was obviously intelligent, interacted well with people, but just always seemed to make stupid decisions that held him back in life beyond having a kid he couldn't support. Sure, in the end he succeeded, but it should not have been as difficult for him to finally reach that point if he just made a few better decisions in life that seem like no-brainers.

It's not even about being born into wealth. I don't disagree that gives you a head start in life, but even kids born into that find a way to fuck it up if they have one of the flaws I mentioned. They just get more rope to make it right. Most of the people I have interacted with have come from a similar middle-class upbringing as me, so that's what mainly based my observation.

In some respects, yes. In others, no. I have always had self-esteem issues, though.

That's psychological projection. You like to see the universe as just because you are just so you just put flaws onto unsuccessful people and ignore flaws on successful people.

I don't see the universe as just, but I also feel like people can manipulate their unique circumstances and abilities to create a niche of success for themselves if they play their cards right.

i'm not so fatalistic. i know too many successful people who are huge fuck-ups, make bad decisions just as often, etc.

but the older i get it seems a positive attitude is really important. successful people have a tendency to always quickly bounce back and not doubt themselves.

That's a good point - outlook is very important. The people I know stuck in ruts even though they are intelligent enough to maek it are often pessimistic or just lack hustle to improve their lives. Despite what movies teach us, it's very rare that all of a sudden a switch comes on where they change their outlooks/behaviors.

you can learn to hustle

you cannot learn to be optimistic (or it's extremely difficult)

My experience/observation is the exact opposite. In fact, most of the people I thought of as very capable and productive have turned out to be people who took advantage of a lucky break and/or a protective set of mentors/managers. The truly off the charts brilliant and effective people are very rare and the rest of us are basically dumb apes that have occasional impressive/effective moments.
