How did they convince everyone to signup to pay $100 a year? I honestly doubt I get $100 in value out of it a year. I used to back when my ex ordered shit every couple days, but now that I get stuff like once a month? Doubtful

the monthly plan probably has decent churn, like after holidays or national TV campaigns. with new signups the average # probably fluctuates but grows steadily over time. Trump's complaining that they're raping USPS was great free publicity, highlighting prime's unique value proposition

That's what I used to think but I probably order stuff maybe 15x a year. And you'd be surprised how much stuff has free shipping even outside of Prime. For example all of December they give free shipping to everyone regardless of Prime status

I think it's insanely profitable for them. it only applies to prime items which means they can control the prices and they capture another layer of invaluable consumer data, for example how consumers respond to different promotions. they own the entire end to end user experience. Target, Lowes and other big box retailers have had similar 5% member cards for years.

(Amazon exec)

The tricky part isn't the $100, it's the implied amazon surcharge. I guarantee prime members end up spending more $$$ on things over the years because they think, eh I'll just buy it at amazon rather than shopping around

Kind of like how Aetna hands out a "CVS Health" branded prescription card -- but you aren't restricted to CVS Pharmacies.

You just go with the path of least resistance.

The time I get back from not having to go to stores is easily worth it. And if you live in NYC essentially nothing is cheaper at IRL stores. So you're just talking about big ticket items that I'm going to shop around for anyway.

BTW what are these items that are more expensive on Amazon? The only things I regularly use that I don't get off Amazon are razors, which I've now subscribed to from dollar shave club. Toilet paper and paper towels are a bit more than from costco, but you also need a membership for costco, which I let lapse years ago, and living in NYC it is better to have them delivered to the doorman than to have to haul them from harlem brooklyn or jersey or pay to have delivered from google delivery.
