I did for a while, sure. Then just started doing all the things I thought I needed in a partner to be stable.

Ended up doing it on my own. Now, I don't see the plus side of "needing" someone.

Obviously, it would have been easier having someone along for the ride. Now I've done it and the "coupling" aspect has since passed.

Damn didn't realize we had similar histories. My first one lasted even longer. I'm not giving up though. I basically accomplished and acquired a bunch of stuff and now my life is perfectly set up to just slot someone young, attractive, and a bit aimless into it. Like I'd literally just have to consolidate half of a closet. The few times I've been on dates with actual adults it's like "whoah, this would be a huge pain in the ass."

my mom got cancer at 51 with a 50/50 prognosis. really came out of nowhere. i felt like things would go on forever, then one month she had a sore throat that wouldn't go away -- and it was cancer. she did end up living, but i will be honest with you, i have never recovered from this. things have seemed a little unreal since then. i wonder if i will ever go back to feeling normal.

They live far away from me. My VP was all no about it. I did it anyway and still work here.

You have to live in the present and be there when you can. Fuck jobs and money when you have someone important to you going through it.

I was the opposite of hedonistic in my teens and early 20s.

I was under the impression that finding *true love* would be some kind of transcendent experience. I thought that if you took hot teenage sex and multiplied it by the kind of mutual caring and adoration that comes with a long term relationship... that was what healthy adult relationships were like.

I have yet to experience anything even close to what I thought "love" would be like. Furthermore, my attraction to teens hasn't waned whatsoever. My attraction to peers is... adequate?

I hold out hope that I will eventually find a certain degree of happiness in a relationship, but it isn't going to be anything like I envisioned and I'm mad at my younger self for having too long of a focus

Short list:

1. i am exceptional

2. my uniqueness means probabilities do not apply. So what if fewer than one-hundredth of one percent of people can maek it as a novelist or artist of some type. That does not apply to me

3. Meaningful, well-paid careers are not something you need to begin planning for and pursuing as a teenager. I can drink and fuck around through my 20s and figure something out later

4. There will always be a pool of marriage-able women, no rush

5. women, at heart, are reasonable like men

6. there comes a time when you "figure shit out" and then just maintain, rather than constantly finding yourself on an incline, confused

But most importantly, like I wrote in number 1... i was sure THE ODDS DONT APPLY TO ME

yes. dozens. They are all nihilistic single bros living in other major metro areas doing the same thing.

i don't understand the absence of a network of alums in a major metro area. were you the only person among your friends to end up there? even if that's the case, surely it's not an endemic condition for ivy grads.

I'm not in NYC or DC and that's where 90% of people I know went.

Almost certainly "alums" in my metro area, but it's not like we'd be friends. No one I know, at the very least. Alumni network = weird striver flame (an inherent problem of going to a striver school)

if you made dozens of friends in college, i guess i don't quite understand why you seem to be struggling to meet people afterwards.

also, it doesn't make sense to attend an ivy if your plan is to teach hs.

well, it's both age and a new zeitgeist. You can't organically meet people anymore. In college, you could just go into a basement, get drunk, and chill with total strangers.

In modern 2018 America for an OLDMO, that's called rape.

I have a follow up question for those who responded itt: If you do have children either now ir later down the road (big if, considering the increasing amount of <><><>foreveralone<><><> both on xo and society in general) - how do you plan on teaching them some of the darker truths of this world when they're older? Or do you plan on letting them figure it out on their own?

you can't teach anyone these things. they can only be learned.

it's why human experience and wisdom is the same story repeated by individuals across history. every epiphany you have was had by someone just like you 3,000 years ago. someone else will be having the same one long after you're dead.

I had a very long relationship with my first girlfriend/wife and always operated under the assumption that it was unbreakable, regardless of what happened. Even when it wasn't going well, the idea of divorce wasn't within my spectrum of possibilities until it actually happened.

Later, I tended to assume my numerous failed internet dates were almost entirely my fault without adequate consideration of the fact that many of the chicks were lame.
