Just do get 1600 SAT, work 80-100 hours a week, and still almost fail out

All of these stories about studying 80+ hours a week sound like complete flame. Are students really waking up at 6 am and studying until midnight every single night of the week, including weekends? Why in the world would anyone do that?

I may be showing my TTT colors but college was pretty chill.

Caltech undergrad's core curriculum is harder than most schools' graduate STEM programs, let alone the more senior classes you take for your hard STEM major

I knew a couple people who went here - all got 1600 SAT, easily top of their class in every aspect in HS, but struggled at Caltech

Your post is half right. They have been gutted, and badly, but it isn't AA and football. In case you haven't noticed, West Point's offensive line averages like 245.

Draw a straight line from today's sorry state of the service academies* and the admission of women (and all that came with it).

*and it is a sorry fucking state https://taskandpurpose.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/twitter_02-840x866.png

"First-year students are enrolled in first-term classes based upon results of placement exams in math, physics, chemistry, and writing and take all classes in their first two terms on a Pass/Fail basis.[83] There is little competition; collaboration on homework is encouraged and the Honor System encourages take-home tests and flexible homework schedules.[85] Caltech offers co-operative programs with other schools, such as the Pasadena Art Center College of Design and Occidental College."

This sounds pretty chill actually.

Yeah, my dad went there in the early 60s, had e.g. Feynman as a prof. Their football team had the Rose Bowl as a home stadium. His guitar-playing dweeb of a freshman roommate won the Nobel prize. A friend of his committed suicide with acid during the year. People also experimented with drugs and shit, LSD, heroin. He got like a 3.1, and that was way above average.

Actually he says his main reason for going was that he heard it was the hardest school to get in to... dunno if it actually was the hardest, although maybe in a more purely academic sense.

CalTech is the only school I give credence to if someone graduated UG.

I am close with a prof there and know a few grads (and two drop outs). It is an insane experience. It is at this point majority Asian. No AA. No BS. No fluff.

My father talked me out of going there and I regret it to this day.

Not sure a 4.0 is possible, but pretty much any tech job he wants if he's a programmer; or he could become an actuary if math guy; or investment banking (if good at mental math)

I think more of them are interested in pursuing academic/research heavy jobs like JPL. A guy with a 4.0 would more likely be pursuing a PhD to get into academia.

According to Parchment, most cross-admits pick MIT / Stanford over Caltech. Those schools give you more options in general, so I'm not surprised. I doubt their student populations are smarter though.
