Why do people use the prepositions "in" and "on" interchangeably these days?

Especially with regards to new shit like social media? It's crazy.
I shared an anecdote "in an email" but "on a blog".
I'm waiting "in line" and I'm waiting "on line" (this one is more a NYC thing that is still not very clear).
I can't think of more examples right now, but they come up on a fucking daily basis. WTF is with this language shit?
