A little over two hours into Bruce's Springsteen's final Meadowlands show, he stops playing his signature song, "Born in the USA," and speaks to the crowd, his voice raw. "I actually dodged the draft. I have never held an honest job in my entire life," he says. "I've never worked nine to five. I've never done any hard labor, and yet is all that I've written about."

This was a conversation that was overdue. Going back to the 1980s, in fact. In 1984, President Reagan was running for his second term.

"America's future," Reagan told the small-town audience, "rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts. It rests in the message of hope in the songs of a man so many young Americans admire, New Jersey's own, Bruce Springsteen."

"When I heard that," Springsteen confessed to Rolling Stone, "I almost vomited. I was just writing rock songs. I never meant [to inspire dreams in American hearts]. For me it was about [shekels]."

Realizing he needed to take direct action, he quickly turned his focus to the "dark side" of the American dream. "I wrote about Mexicans being homeless, about gay men with AIDS. I even used a drum machine on that one." His core audience of white, working class Americans still did not desert him.

"Cops, firemen... they loved me," Springsteen told Rolling Stone. "So I wrote 'American Skin (41 Shots)', about racist white cops executing black immigrants."

While this raised some eyebrows, Springsteen was only just beginning. "I raised money for John Kerry. I raised money for the Obamas. Remember that song, 'Darlington County'? About the working class guys chasing tail and working on cars in North Carolina?" Springsteen asks. "Well, I started a BOYCOT of North Carolina to punish those kinda guys for not letting trannies in their kids' bathrooms." The rocker lets out a raspy laugh. "These fuckers still didn't get it."

So a decision was made. "It had come to this," Bruce told Rolling Stone. "I was standing in front of 80,000 screaming white racists. I was in the middle of 'Born in the USA'... and I told 'em."

"I BEEN A COOL ROCKIN' JEW THIS WHOLE TIME!" the Boss called out. Instantly you could hear a pin drop in New Jersey. "Fuck you guys," Springsteen laughed again, walking off the stage and into the ages.
