This metric, introduced in 1985, seeks to demonstrate which firms best balance leverage and profit margin for the highest possible profits per partner. We calculate the profitability index by dividing profits per partner by revenue per lawyer.
Our value per lawyer metric demonstrates how much, on average, each of a firm’s lawyers contributes to total partner compensation. On average, value per lawyer for the Am Law 100 increased 4 percent, up from 2.4 percent in 2016.
