every internet community thinks of themselves as uniquely intelligent. reddit and 4chan are as guilty of this as XO, albeit they're willing to peg their numbers as being a little lower. they also all believe that whatever superior IQ bucket they all happen to belong to is one where they are burdened with the unique predicament of being not intelligent enough to steamroll all obstacles in life but still smart enough to have a higher level of consciousness that results in introspection, self-doubt, etc. they're all trapped in this sisyphusean cycle of depression and despair. i think this is just a result of overconditioning at the hands of birdbrain society. anyone who is marginally intelligent is injected with a dose of narcissism when they are shuffled through any educational institution and this causes a lot of clouded thought. every nerd somehow gets the idea that he'll be the next plato or joyce or newton or caesar or rockefeller or insert historical figure here or, at a minimum, is capable of forming original, pragmatic, and actionable thought. and to some extent this is warranted because if you can read and understand a great thinker then to some extent you might have the capacity for the same sorts of things. but the randomness of what pops into people's heads and those things being original in any way shape or form is absurd and this is an idea that is hard to come to grips with especially if you're even remotely narcissistic and intelligent. your teachers tell you are smart, your parents tell you you are smart, your friends tell you you are smart, and even the shit that you buy and gets advertised to you and essentially all media or content you interact with tells you that you are smart. the idea that original thoughts are like panning for diamonds in a river sucks because that just means all of the poor prospectors are equally as intelligent and capable as the one who gets rich. and that's essentially what xo is. it's just a bunch of people in the same iq bracket endlessly flipping over the exact same concepts and ideas ad infinitum with the hope that they find a diamond in the pan. what's more terrifying is that there are thousands of websites that are approximately similar to here yet no one seems to have ever said anything of value across all of them. but maybe we're all victims of our time and in 200 years your ancestors will have to discuss DTP threads in a college classroom. and i think that's why everyone is here and why everyone who is here feels that we are all uniquely depressed and fucked up but at the same time intelligent--all Sisyphusean figures rolling the same boulder with the same end goal.
