No. The reason is CAFE. No one wants a small car, but manufacturers have to sell small cars to meet CAFE or pay fines (MB, JLR, FCA usually pay fines). So because of CAFE the market is flooded with small cars which drives down the prices.

If you let pure market demand take over (no CAFE, no gas guzzler tax), we would be back to the 1960s and all driving giant cars with huge V8s. No one actually wants a 4 cylinder turbo. We buy them because that’s the only option. The SUVs escape the gas guzzler tax which is why there was the shift from big cars to SUVs.

Chicken tax is a moot point (almost) because it only applies to pick ups and vans, not SUVs, and the foreign manufacturers make them in NAFTA countries.

I don't know about a return to the 60s, but the turbo 4 trend is pure CAFE whoring. In IRL situations turbos don't see the same mpg gains.

Ford will start building its new small pickup, the Ranger, in 2018, after the Focus moves to China. In 2020, it will build the new Bronco, the SUV model it is bringing back, at the Michigan plant.
