it's actually reverting to what it was originally, in the 1950s, which was more 'free form', with hosts like Jack Parr and those guys just 'hanging out' in their slippers, creating a 'Look who dropped by to chat in my living room!' *blows a kazoo* vibe.
it got really formalized in the 80s/90s, because it became more about creating a streamlined 'product', as much larger audiences and revenues were involved.
now TV audiences are smaller, no one gives a fuck again.
Johnny Carson's show was like 2 and 1/2 hours long in the 60s/70s, because half the show was just him jacking off.
