Manila itself is a huge dirty, congested megacity but it's interesting in a grimy way, and the Manila Peninsula is so laughably cheap that it's 180 and a great oasis in the city.
The only real party (for me at least) is Boracay which is closed for 6mo because Chinese have destroyed it by being locusts, like they are. While that's a fun party island it's also very beautiful and there's good diving nearby.
This trip I went to Palawan, which has 1800000 nature. Only made it to El Nido, where you have nice beaches, hiking in the jungle to waterfalls, snorkeling, diving and the boat tours of Bacuit Bay which are amazing. There are like 7107 islands in the Philippines, the tours from El Nido (and other similar places) let you explore lots of the small uninhabited islands. I think the bro who wrote The Beach was actually inspired by his time in Palawan in the 90's which must have been crazy undeveloped as compared to now. Also in Palawan, Coron is similar to El Nido and Port Barton is supposed to be like El Nido was 10 years ago. From Sabang you can check out DAT underground river which is apparently one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. We tried to shoehorn it in at the end of the trip, but you need to get a permit back in Puerto Princesa, and there just wasn't time. Next year.
Outside of Palawan and Boracay, Malapascua is supposed to be 180 for diving and I think surfing. The rice terraces in Banaue and hiking in the jungle there is amazing. Near Cebu there is diving/snorkeling with whale sharks, the beaches of Panglao Island, the chocolate hills of bohol and all of this is just the little bit of the country I have discovered. You could spend months there seeing vastly different things and having an amazing time.
As an added bonus, the Filipino people are some of the nicest, most cheerful and warm people I've come across anywhere. As a result of them being an American protectorate for so long almost all of them speak English and the country is LJL cheap. I know you're not a drinkmo, but for me and gf a night out in El Nido with tuk tuk to/from town and drinks all night was like $12 total.
Sad to be leaving, will be back ASAP in 2019. |
