I'm torn. I've released thousands of king salmon, but that's because you can only keep 2 a year. I've probably released over a hundred 60+ pounders even. But, the thing is I don't know if it really helps. I believe the morbidity rate is much much higher than they let on. If you fight a king salmon for an hour, even if it survives the fight after being released, why would you think that it has the energy to spawn a new generation of large salmon?

That said, every king caught would die in the next few months anyway.

Kudos to those people releasing large fish, but I have no problem with people killing big kings either. I would never shame them for catching a trophy fish.

I have a picture on FB that is still getting shamed on. Me and my ex-wife in front of four 60+ pounders.

I think morbidity really depends on where/how they are caught and what species it is. I've heard from knowledgeable folks that coho caught in tidewater have a really high morbidity rate. Not sure about big kings and not sure how often the swallow hooks or get hooked in some other damaging way.

I've seen people release kings that were puffing blood out of their gills, just to say they released a big king. I think they're missing the point and should be charged with wanton waste.

Yeah, obviously there are some fish that just aren't going to make it, but I'm happy to see some people encouraging release of quality specimens.

How angry do you think this pic makes salmon fishermen?

I'm on the left... back when I was a guide. Four 60+ pounders all caught within a 2.5 hour timespan on the last day of the season.

Most of the people I know who care about this sort of thing have a bunch of those pics themselves. It's only the specific runs that are clearly in decline where it tics them off.
