an observation about 'networking'

Date: May 19th, 2018 9:38 PM Author: big theater i went to a fundraising event for a relatively conservative organization. i am a member of a couple of pretty liberal organizations as well because i'm involved in NYC stuff. this was in NYC. in years of going to mainly 'liberal' events, i made connections, but they never really panned out into anything substantive career wise. were they good events that furthered decent causes? sure. but that knock off benefit of furthering my career? nothing.
i go to this particular event and legit got 2 STRONG career leads. partner at a relatively strong midlevel firm meets and we chat and in 5 minutes he finds out i'm taking the bar and we share some other things in common. mind you, he's like a 60 year oldish jewish guy and i'm a 40 year old latino dude. he goes "be sure to call me" and we trade cards. Another guy, also older, same thing.
ffwd two days later. he gives me a call: "any interest in working for me?" of course, i could use a landing place. "i got you. always good to help a young family man trying to get in the field." same day, get an email from another guy at a small boutique shop "be sure to send me your resume. you should be good, but would like to talk to you and see if we could make this work. its always hard to find good guys."
maybe it's just a coincidence, but interesting nonetheless. |

Date: May 19th, 2018 9:47 PM Author: big theater the grass is always greener on the other side. i don't feel like i hit the lottery being latino. i feel as if a lot of times--and this could be garden variety imposter syndrome/insecurity--that when people hear of my academic background they think "well, affirmative action..." etc.
at the end of the day, if it's getting my foot in the door, the only thing i can do is leverage that which i haven't. |

Date: May 19th, 2018 9:43 PM Author: big theater i've been thinking about it and i have a theory about it. i think at a lot of liberal-ish events, many of the professionals are doing well but not really in the position to "make jobs". they can refer you strongly, but ultimately it's up to someone else. think like a bunch of midlevels...they can pass on your resume, but they can't straight out hire you.

Date: May 19th, 2018 9:50 PM Author: big theater you get where my head's at. i look at my frat and there is a general frustration in the organization that young guys are not getting jobs offered by old heads. and the old heads are like "we're still not in the position in our organizations to make jobs" whereas the guys who built their own businesses can do that but they are few and far between.
the biggest mistake the first large wave of black and brown college educated dudes made was chasing the corporate success instead of staking out on their own and making their own businesses.
FATCEPS input here would be interesting since he's part of an organization that's black and RATHER old that i think does a good job of "hooking up" their brothers. |
