Stalin was prepared for a long drawn out war enduring Russian winters. Hitler and Germany were geared towards a 12 to 15 week campaign where the need to light fires under a petrol engine just to get it going was not considered .
The development of the Diesel engine in the 30s by the Soviets was a key factor in winning the war. People talk about the decision by the Germans to split their attack in 1941 and 1942 as being decisive. I believe that the decision by the soviets to mass produce medium and heavy tanks KV and T34 with Diesel engines in the late 30s made a major contribution to the outcome . This was matched by Germany's decision to ignore the possibility of a winter war and the need for big guns on their tanks . By the time they realised their mistake it was too late.
The Panther tank never worked properly and was ill suited to the environment it operated in. The Tiger whilst a great tank broke down too often and couldn't be produced in sufficient numbers . These problems were not due to decisions in the war they were due to decisions before the war even started.
In the end the war was won because the Russians better judged, in advance, what the war would be like and prepared for it. Diesel engines played a part in that. Germany did not for forsee a long conflict and as a result didn't see the need for complexities such as Diesel engines. This was just important in them losing as was any tactical or strategic mistake they made on the battlefield.

As a general matter, diesel engines are much more difficult to start in cold weather than gas engines. |
