They thought the GOP House Intel Committee and Nunes were close to leaking the story (hence all the hysteria over Nunes outing sources), so they preempted the leaks with their own spin.

This is correct. Nunes demanded the source name document from Rosenstein, Rosenstein said no, Nunes threatened to hold him in contempt of congress, Rosenstein ran to Paul Ryan to get him to back off, Paul Ryan sided with Nunes, Rosenstein met with Paul Ryan & Gowdy where nothing happened at the meeting & promised to meet again the following Friday, Nunes cancelled the meeting on that Thursday after Rosenstein wouldn't promise to deliver the documents at the meeting, the NYT & WaPo stories leaked the next day (which would have been blamed on Nunes if he actually attended the Friday meeting with Rosenstein).

I actually think it’s even more nefarious than that. The leaks weren’t just intended to pre-empt Nunes and Gowdy, they were intended to be PINNED on Nunes and Gowdy—the name, etc. all came out almost simultaneously with the meeting they wisely cancelled (at the last minute) with the DOJ/FBI. I think that timing is not an accident and was going to be the centerpiece of ramped up demands for Speaker Ryan to remove Nunes from the Intelligence Committee.

It’s now obvious that the leaks were on the DOJ/FBI side. The attempted frame-up requires a bit of conjecture but I think it’s highly likely.

Nunes and Gowdy didn't attend the Friday meeting because they weren't given assurances that the source would be named in it after they had just wasted Thursday talking to them.

If the DOJ really wanted to burn Nunes/Gowdy, they would've dangled that card in front of them.

They wern't demanding assurances about the source to be *named*, they were demanding that the documents pertaining to the source be *produced* at the meeting. Important distinction.

Of course, they issued a congressional subpoena and wanted to share the documents with the rest of the Committee to get plausible deniability before they leaked them. That's how this has always worked.

A more charitable version is this: Rosenstein was going to capitulate and deliver the documents to Nunes within the next 10 days anyway after Nunes drew a red line and ceased talks, so he preemptively leaked.

Rosenstein is a traitor but I'm not sure about Sessions. Sessions appointed Huber as an outside prosecutor for Horowitz (neither of which have had any leaks) and leaked the Strzok/Page texts to the public when no one else knew about them the day after Flynn plead guilty.

I just can't get around the fact that Sessions (1) chose Rosenstein as his deputy and (2) recused himself from all Russia related matters in the first place.

I don’t think Sessions realized Rosenstein would turn out this way. Just was told he was compentent and respected in the DOJ. Rosenstein worked on the Whitewater investigation, but people still don’t realize that Never Trumpers are nearly as nefarious as Hillary’s folks.

Rosenstein is still not as bad as some of the worst actors in the DOJ though. He recommended Comey's dismissal and is now referring the Trump Campaign FISA abuse case to the IG.

It could've been worse, Rosenstein seems to be one of the relatively more professional bureaucrats.

Rosenstein recommended Comey's dismissal and then used the *dismissal itself* as the reason to appoint Mueller, which is insane -- and so is his failure to recuse himself.

https://forward.com/fast-forward/398842/comey-rosenstein-acted-dishonorably-but-probably-wont-fire-mueller/

"Comey said that he came to believe that Rosenstein was “part of the family now. I can’t trust him.”

But Comey also said that Rosenstein would not fire special counsel Robert Mueller if ordered to do so by Trump, since Rosenstein “has an opportunity in overseeing Bob Mueller to restore some of his professional reputation.”"

Every Organized Group has a weak link, that link for this cabal was Rosenstein (Rosenstein probably really wanted Hillary to defeat Trump and was furious at Comey, coup be damned).

The "palace coup" was supposed to be executed by Comey. He was supposed to unleash all the information we have now about Prince, the Trump Tower meetings, etc. in a report sometime in mid-2017 and this would've precipitated impeachment.

Trump firing Comey delayed the investigation by a few months and allowed Trump to build up alliances in the GOP.

None of this information was supposed to come out. The investigation was supposed to be much more private.

Mueller has been trying to salvage what he can out of the investigation by taking as many scalps as possible to justify its existence in broad daylight.

Moore winning the GOP nomination in the AL senate race spooked Establishment Republicans into realizing that there would be a political price to pay for opposing Trump. Bannon immeasurably helped Trump with this task. He got Corker and Flake out.

Ryan wanted to pass tax cuts, entitlement reform, etc. w/ President Pence, now that the latter isn't happening, he's packing his bags after giving donors the former.

Sessions had an ethical duty to inform Trump of his plans to recuse himself from the Russia investigation while Trump was considering him for AG. He didn't do so.

After Rosenstein's politics became known, Sessions said he would quit if Rosenstein was fired:

Sessions recommended Rosenstein to Trump for the DAG job.

https://www.cnn.com/2017/01/12/politics/donald-trump-deputy-attorney-general/index.html

"Trump has allowed his Cabinet nominees to play a major role in helping fill top positions in their agencies, a strategy past administrations haven't always followed.

Sessions, a former US attorney in Alabama, helped choose Rosenstein, transition officials say, in part because of his deep ties to the Justice Department."

Nunes smelled a rat.

--

Nunes Says He Won't Meet With DOJ Officials Until Docs Handed Over

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes will refuse to meet with Justice Department officials until they hand over documents connected to an FBI source who spoke with Trump campaign aides in 2016 about Russian interference in the election, The Hill reported on Sunday.

The California Republican accused officials in the Department of Justice of leaking the information after he and South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy did not agree to an offer from DOJ officials to answer the congressmen’s questions in a briefing on Friday.

Earlier this month, Nunes had threated DOJ officials with contempt of Congress if they did not release documents connected to the source that he has subpoenaed, CNN reported.

Following that threat, DOJ officials briefed Nunes and Gowdy a few weeks ago.

The congressmen called that a "productive discussion," writing that "The officials committed to holding further discussions of these matters, and we look forward to continuing our dialogue next week to satisfy the Committee's request," according to the Washington Examiner.

But the controversy became more heated after that as reports circulated that that the FBI source may have been a plant to spy on the Trump campaign for investigators.

The DOJ then offered to brief the congressmen again on Friday since not all their questions were answered, but Nunes and Gowdy refused.

"Now if you look at what happened on Friday night, probably the mother of all leaks, of all time, to two major newspapers, that came out Friday night. Now, had Mr. Gowdy and I went to that meeting, you can bet they would have tried to pin that on us," Nunes told Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures."

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will demand the Justice Department investigate if the FBI sent a spy into his presidential campaign for political reasons.
