Seems like a sneaky solid African country, doesn’t get much pub but brings a lot to the table.

The only decently governed country in sub-saharan Africa. The only prosperous country in sub-saharan Africa. Insanely high AIDS rates though.

Don’t know much more. When other countries in Africa became independent, a lot of them fell into the Soviet camp to various extents; third world Marxism was big in Africa in the 60s and 70s. But Botswana basically stuck to the boring but productive position of parliamentary democracy and a market economy. They grew steadily and without drama for a few decades, without Marxist brain snaps or civil wars, into a moderately prosperous and stable country. They had a king who wasn’t a megalomaniac but wanted to preserve his country’s future, which helps.

Someone is going to say “but MAH DIAMONDS” to which I say “Liberia, Sierra Leone, every other African country”.

Higher GDP per capita than South Africa.

Higher by multiples or orders of magnitude than everywhere else in Africa.
