During his association with Wesleyan University, Manchester developed an intense writing regimen that he adhered to for much of his life, often writing nonstop for up to 50 hours at a time. He described the experience as follows: "I would work all day, all night, all the next day, all the following night and into the third day. I would look up at the clock, and it would be 3:30 in the afternoon, and I would say, 'Oh boy, I've got three more hours to write.' I just loved it."[7]

But on the flipside, he got 15 years of writer's block that kept him from ever finishing The Last Lion, and instead he wrote a shitty book about the Middle Ages.

Is middle ages book shitty?

I am reading 1st vol of last lion and love it. Is there a drop off in quality when the other guy takes over in 3rd volume? How much of 3rd did Manchester right?

A World Lit Only By Fire is a crappy book. Manchester had no scholarly expertise on the topic at all and relied mostly on secondary sources but then tried to push an aggressive conclusion writing off the entire medieval era as a backwards nullity.

Volume 3 of The Last Lion definitely reads differently from the first two, and even reaches some different conclusions (for example, Manchester believed that Churchill drank a ton but just controlled himself well; Reid thinks that Churchill paced his drinking so that he was rarely truly intoxicated). That said it's still a good read.
