He's in his early 60s and has had a lot of heart problems and related issues. He had quintuple bypass surgery at 54 and then a stent years after that. Found out a few months ago one of his carotid arteries is fully occluded. Currently dealing with abnormally low heart rate and blood pressure issues and wearing a heart monitor to determine if he needs a pacemaker. He has no energy and tires easily. I just feel like things continue to get progressively worse for him.

I don't know what happened to make his heart health so bad. My grandfather was healthy and lived into his late 80s without serious health problems despite having smoked.

Any poasters have a father die early?

Thanks. I live relatively close and try to see them as often as I can, but I want to leave my current job and city and options are farther away, so I'm struggling to decide what to do.

My dad died less than a month ago. It was his third stroke. Not great. He was quite overweight and not active. Encourage your father to live healthy, even if its just walking.

That sucks, really sorry to hear that. My dad should take better care of himself and I've kept at him about for years, but he's just stubborn.

How is your mom handling it? I worry a lot about my mom, sometimes I feel like she's on her own dealing with this

Well, funny you should ask. My parents are divorced but my stepdad also died. In the same week. It was like two days after my dad's death. Stepdad was in perfect shape and good health, diagnosed with stage 4 terminal stomach cancer and killed himself weeks after diagnosis.

Mom is not great. She has been staying with my sis and with me and traveling. Hasnt been alone since it happened. But she went home Sunday so we will see.

It's just me and my sister also, and my sister can barely take care of herself, so I worry about taking care of my mom if something happens.

She has been awfully bitchy but no one will even say anything becasue, you know, like holy shit, right? I damn near had a panic attack after she left last sunday, just at the thought of dealing with her like this forever. Plus i actually have grown to like my dad and my stepdad, each in their own way. I know its hardest on her but its not great for me. And just before leaving my mom started talking about how my last surviving grandma will die, who is my favorite relative, because her son just died.

That's rough to deal with. My grandmother (my dad's mom) is like that to an extent, there is no sadness but theirs.

My mom is a saint and her mom was a widow for nearly 40 years. She would try to soldier on and worry about us.

Going through this right now with my dad. He needs a Kidney transplant and I may need to donate a kidney if I'm a match.

I can't help but be mad at him for not taking care of himself.

Terrible. After surviving the stroke and heart attacks, you'd think it would kick him into gear and start eating healthier, getting more active. Nope, I don't think he leaves his lazy boy except to go to the bathroom. He still eats like shit.

It's frustrating. I love him, but it's disheartening to think I'm going to give away a perfectly functioning kidney to a person that has such little respect for his own life.

Man, easier said than done and I would probably do what are your going to do, but from an outside perspective, giving that kidney makes no sense.

My aunt is first in line, because siblings are the most viable matches. If she can't, then I'm the oldest child that isn't disgustingly obese, or tobacco user. (I quit chewing a month ago just to be able to donate, if need be).

I might not even be a match, but won't know unless my aunt isn't a match.

If I'm a match, I'm definitely donating.

Just spend as much time with him as possible. And have every conversation you might be waiting on having. Also, maybe take some videos. My mom passed two weeks ago at 55. Don’t think you can prepare for it tho.
