I've done bjj for fourth months and my hands now have arthritis and callouses. There is no way around it. Tight grips are a large part of the game. Breaking and jamming fingers is also a frequent occurrence. He should do muy thai or boxing instead. Bjj is more fun but it fucks your hands.

No gi is probably better but still very dangerous due to more standing takedowns and still high risk of jamming and breaking fingers.
