Apple was crazy to think they could get into car manufacturing, but their plans sound pretty awesome. We are stuck with incremental changes in the car market now. Another company will eventually build the equivalent of the iPhone of cars now.

Apple enlisted software programmers, automotive engineers, rocket scientists and the industrial-design team of Apple’s design chief, Jonathan Ive, to reimagine the car. They entertained a series of unconventional concepts, including augmented-reality or holographic displays embedded in windshields and windows, a sunroof made of a special polymer that reduces heat from the sun, and windows with adjustable tints — like those on Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner jets.
Two former Apple employees also recalled how their colleagues built a model of a sport-utility vehicle with four seats facing each other, which some employees tested by sitting inside, similar to a design Mercedes advertised in 2015.

Yeah, I remember reading about Jobs saying he had "cracked" TV before he died. The issue with the iCar and iTV is also partly that Apple demands total control and the auto manufacturers and cable companies refused to give into their demands. Everyone saw what happened to the music companies with iTunes.
I agree they seem to be floundering and no game changing product is planned that I have heard about. They are working on AR/VR, but it is far from clear that they will have the best product. Decline seems inevitable at this point.
