This means two things:

(1) he has spent literally $100k+ on restaurants and other shit

(2) he has never actually redeemed any of his points

The dude lives a luxe lifestyle in LA but is so busy he can't take a trip to escape. He's sitting on multiple international trips in first class and no time to use them.

Or he thinks its irresponsible to use them for vacation. Might need 600k points to take a first class lie flat ambulance to the hospital if he gets seriously ill.

he also said he shelled out like $1,400 for a coach flight from LA to Philly, presumably without checking if he could cop the same for points and a pittance.

just ran a UA search for his dates (fri to tues as I recall), 1-stop flights in each direction coach roundtrip space open for 25k miles total + minimal fees.

wife and i did this, too. she had her own card for a year to get the 100k bonus + $300 travel credit, and then we consolidated our points on one card.

even if she kept her own card, it's only $150/year since there's a $300 travel credit.

He didn’t take a honeymoon either. it literally takes 30 min to book a long haul trip a year from now that will burn through 350k points. Or just book domestic tix to Hawaii or other places where the ticket costs $500+. Not sure why he doesn’t do it. Points only get devalued.

Unless you're on top of shit (tracking changes on Flyertalk, always swapping out cards to maximize each purchase, and figuring out how to max out redemptions), "points" wind up generally being in the favor of the CC company. Usually, if some glitch opens up in the system where a silly redemption hole exists, they close it up pretty quickly.

I steer most people towards a 2% cash back on anything w/ no caps or limits. Fidelity has one that auto-deposits into a brokerage account. Just keep pouring that into Fidelity ETFs or Mutual funds w/ no fee transactions. Pretty sure getting 2% redemption immediately each month + market returns will beat most point based systems.

I agree with all of this for regular, everyday spending, but with the caveat that it is cr to take advantage of 180 card opening bonuses. He could have racked up 80K with Chase Ink Biz, copped the 100K Chase Reserve bonus last year, and 50K with the Chase Preferred Card. That's the equivalent of a few grand just for opening accounts.

chase will shut down accounts for all kinds of reasons and probably take away the points. that's risky

There is also that too. They're really good at discerning churners and people who manufacture points.

It is. Chase is pretty on the ball when it comes to this, I know people who couldn't get the CSR 100k because they had churned a few prior. I agree with you, the sign up bonuses are worth it, you just have to be disciplined to cash that out.

Amex does that for Plat, if you read the fine print, if you ever opened up a Plat and took a 50-100k sign up bonus, you're not eligible for that again if you closed then later reopen a Plat account again. The exception is if you do a different branded Plat, like mine is an Ameriprise Plat.

100K points my sign up

100K points my wife sign up (changed it into chase freedom this year after using travel credit for 2017 and 2018)

50K points from my old chase preferred

80K points for chase ink business.

I probably spend over $100K on the chase cards over the past 2 and a half years, but that includes my wedding, engagement ring for wife, tip for ring salesperson, and all the food we eat, travel we do, ubers, etc.

I do have a problem not travelling enough - or being to lazy to see how to spend the points efficiently.

Regarding my $1100 trip to philly, I had to arrive Friday before 8 pm and leave Monday after 5 pm. That limited available flights and made it so expensive.
