"“As a Cravath associate in the 1980s for nearly 10 years, my ‘low’ was 2,500 hours and my ‘high’ was 3,500. During one nine-month stretch on takeover litigation as the lead associate, I averaged 90 hours a week, and at the end of it worked for 56 hours straight without a break or any sleep, to meet a filing deadline (made by chartering a helicopter to get the papers to court on time). I wouldn’t trade those years for anything. It was the best work possible for a young lawyer, at the best law firm on earth.”"

They weren't working that many hours in the 80s. Cravath PPP was only about 700k in 1986 or 1.6 million in today's dollars. They were working far less than now (in addition to lower billing rates and less leverage).

TBF there was a lot more inefficiency then. You had to call in and check your messages. And when there were things like TROs going on — which there were a ton of in the junk bond corporate raider days — you would be in the office 24/7, though you often had to wait for shit (from typists, from courriers, etc.) and couldn’t bill that.

Also $1.6 M was not bad when a 3br apartment on CPW cost $1 M.
