People who associate NIN with “depression” aren’t fans of music, they think that lyrics are the most important thing in a song and don’t read past that. Trent is a phenomenal producer and manages to evoke intense emotions with a simple piano motif or synth drone, that’s what makes NIN endure. Yes his lyrics can be overwrought and even comical, especially in the early days, but even he admits that in interviews. The way he screams right before the heavy instrumental part doesn't have any words, and yet we know what it means. I don't personally associate it with depression, I find it 180. But I find that normal people (non-depressmos) might find this a little too intense to listen to on a normal basis. I could listen to this shit everyday, but I have depressive tendencies.
