I know nothing about this stuff, but I've always thought it would be fun to try my hand at making electronica (for personal enjoyment/as a hobby) - does getting something like live make sense? Or some other software package? Do I have to get a midi controller too, or can I do without that while i get the hang of it?
If I get live, what version should I get? it starts at like $100 but then jumps to something like $500 and $800

Ableton has everything you need to get started and more. The intro tier is a barebones version without many of the built-in software instruments. You won’t get Operator (very good frequency modulation synth), Tension (physical modeling synth), and many others including the samples and sound content. What you will get is an analog modeling synth, as well as a stripped down Sampler (the best sampling instrument available, it’s perfect) and the Drum Machine. You can do so much with just that, and then upgrade when ready.
You won’t necessarily need a midi controller, everything can be programmed within the DAW using the sequencer and clip launcher. If you are a performing musician or just prefer to play in real time then you will want one. Ableton makes a controller called the Push that is very forward thinking and integrates seamlessly with Live. HTH.

Professional musician here. Play 3 instruments and have been producing music for over a decade (on Logic Pro). Just started with Ableton and push this week.... its life changing really. The ableton bros conceptualize music in a way thats more like how modern music actually works. I wouldnt use it for mixing, sound design or screen scoring, but for semi improvisational electronic composition it is the best thing ive ever seen.
And with Push 2 you can control an entire studio in a live performance. It is THE instrument of the 21st century imo
