It turned out that way because her husband finished his residency, started making money and they moved somewhere with good COL. let’s say instead the only job he got was in nyc and they stayed. she may be forced to continue working. She was working a job remotely at a legal non profit before quitting. That sounds like a low paying job that doesn’t make sense to keep. Let’s say she got a cushy in house job that was 9-5 making $250k. Maybe she would’ve continued working then.
It’s hard to criticize someone for how life turned out 10 years after she first started school when there were a lot of different things that had to happen before she could reach this point where it made sense for her to quit. |

I can only say anecdotally that at my 10 year reunion, maybe 50% of my former classmates are no longer practicing lawyers and a higher portion of men than women were doing non-law related stuff and no longer using their degrees. I suspect this has to do with men being greater risk takers while women are not. The women are far more likely to have govt jobs or other lifestyle friendly legal jobs than random non legal careers and they’re not going to do total bs stuff like MLM cosmetics.
At least at the top schools, not sure what the intended result is to discourage women specifically from pursuing degrees. For any individual woman who is actually smart and capable and doesn’t come from family money or already has a rich husband/engaged in professional school, there’s no fallback position on how you support yourself through life. |

I just take issue with the idea of a high achieving woman who obtained a non-worthless degree giving it all up to be a sahm as worth more derision than a man who got the same degree, worked a few years in biglaw, and then gave it up to do a completely unrelated business. Both didn’t end up using degrees but because the man is still working, it’s not seen a total waste. |

Somehow, explaining what it was like to be a litigator at a white-shoe law firm in New York City is really hard even though there are plenty of juicy tidbits that non-lawyers love to balk at: I worked 80 hours a week but only got credit for 60! I stayed in the office all throughout a holiday weekend to write an emergency motion that we didn't end up filing! I got yelled at by a senior male partner in front of a bunch of other men for a mistake I didn't even make!
Bottom line: when you're an attorney (or any professional) working at a high level, you live in a constant state of stress. Your time isn't your own. You're at the mercy of a bunch of panicked nerds with diagnosable personality disorders. Wonderful."
