You also see this in movies a LOT.

There are many instances in TV shows and Movies where women are shamed at how they treated Melvin but they are not shamed for their treating Melvin like a Melvin - they are shamed for not being able to realize that the man they thought was Melvin was secretly Chad.

For example, in Married With Children at the high school reunion of Al Bundy's bimbo daughter, Melvin (who she totally ignored in High School) turned out to be Chad and then shamed her dumb ass for being too petty to realize that he was secretly Chad when he asked her out as a youth.

This always tickled me to observe.

Even in real life the actor Jaleel White turned into a super ripped Chad.

Time and time again it is very interesting to see this trope appear constantly in literature, film, etc. It is often not really commented upon.

Basically this functions as a cautionary tale to women to be extremely careful in recognizing Chad

There was some random Ryan Reynolds B movie like 10 years ago I saw half of on TV once where this was the entire plot.

Film begins where Ryan Reynolds is a total Melvin beta orbiter in HS but pines for Becky and is in the Friend Zone but Becky is still dating who she thought was Chad - then 10-20 years go by and Melvin (played by Ryan Reynolds) has left for college and the Big City & in the process has become a MegaChad and goes back to his hometown to find Becky living at home with her parents doing nothing with her life.

After a major scene where Becky realizes that Melvin was actually Chad the whole time and is forced to come to terms that she missed out on Chad - and was actually side tracked by Faux-Chad (sort of a Plato Allegory of the Cave here - except for women attempting to perceive what is a real Chad) - and that her life has gone nowhere while Melvin improved his life to become a multi-millionaire MegaChad record executive (in the movie).

The entire plot of the movie then becomes basically Ryan Reynolds wants to give it a shot with HS Becky again - this is of course after she has aged over the hill and probably fucked most of dudes in the entire small town (this is obviously not in the script) but - Alas! What is this?? A plot twist worthy of Shakespeare: Even though Ryan Reynolds has become MegaChad - he has a weak spot with this Becky because he was once a Melvin in her eyes - and the entire movie then becomes Ryan Reynolds overcoming this roadblock and locking the Becky of his HS years down. Even though she is now much older and is doing nothing with her life.

the joke is that irl, a guy who became a mega-Chad like that would not give two fucks about that girl anymore, and if anything, possibly hatefuck her once and never speak to her again

In my wife’s romance novels there is a similar progression but in a different context.

1. Woman is born into nobility/money

2. Despite this, she is “not like the other girls” but is very free spirited and anachronistically modern ( they are all set in the early-mid 19th cent.)

3. She is supposed to marry a stable aristocrat but can’t help from falling in love with a roguish bad boy. This will be the end of her!

4. Never mind. turns out the roguish bad boy is secretly in line to inherit a dukedom or something. Heroine will suffer no consequences whatsoever and in fact will be rewarded for her decisions.

5. Epilogue- she is pregnant.
