Agreed. We're a society that derives an extraordinary amount of its self-worth from work and wealth. Because of the way the modern economy operates, a lot of people are falling into depressive and anti-social states (drug abuse, depression, failure to connect with others) as they fail to meet the lofty expectations that our society has set out for them. These anti-social behaviors are an issue everywhere in the first world, but I'd argue that the US is far worse in contending with the modern economy because of its aversion to the type of redistributive polices that would restore communities. I fear that the American worship of work, wealth, and individualism will prevent us from ever responding intelligently to the modern economy.
