Is Canada a better place socially and culturally than the US?

I do know that Canadians are a lot taller and better looking than Americans. They're also more honest and less corrupt. Those 3 facts alone make it quite a lot better than the US.

pro: ---- > really easy to get a university degree without paying that much > easy to be a broke-ass student bc loans are inexpensive and you have health care > doesn't have the relentlessly corporate vibe of the USA, small towns have personality and aren't just interchangeable stripmalls with megacorp food and retail > blue-collar life seems more viable and trailer park boys notwithstanding the proles are a lot less shitprole than in the USA
cons: ----- > big biz is dominated by weird corrupt conglomerates that are not transparent at all and own major political parties -- power corp. is more like a gilded age company than a modern US corporation > it's easy to get from 20th to 80th percentile but hard as balls to get past that. family money/connex plays a much bigger role than in the USA bc you can't easily bootstrap yourself through UG admissions/tech job/biglaw/medicine > related, ppl 35-40 in law, tech, academia, etc are not doing great, at least in GTA, because their salaries are way worse relative to RE than anywhere in USA except SF. imagine being a 7th year assoc and billing 2500 but only making 200k canadian > canadian culture is weirdly conformist and anti-achievement |

People generally make 1/3 less money and real estate in the handful of good cities in Canada is NYC level crazy but with everyone making 1/3 less money. Everything else like free health care and cheap tuition is basically irrelevant in lieu of this dynamic. Also, while they have single payer health insurance it doesnt cover ANY pharmaceuticals. For drugs you need a private policy on top of their TTT state coverage and when you earn 1/3 less than Americans the end result is youre just as fucked as a Yankee prole.

your GDP/capita numbers are old. today the gap is about 20%, both raw and in PPP. RE is bad but it's not NY level. per this link, you can rent a 3BR detached house in GTA for CDN$2000-2500: https://www.kijiji.ca/b-house-rental/gta-greater-toronto-area/3+bedrooms/c43l1700272a15 . Try doing that in NYC. 2 minutes of searching found this 3BR on bloor west for $3k, https://www.zumper.com/apartment-buildings/p326139/940-bloor-street-west-dovercourt-park-toronto-on, which is like finding one in midtown or something.
if i had a job at a bay street firm, i could walk in 20 min from that $3k 3BR. but like i said earlier, that job would pay $200k as a sr assoc. also, entrepreneurialism in canada is way harder.
the comparison to europe is apt, though. there's a boil-off effect where a lot of the most talented canadians leave because their own country offers them nothing but mediocrity. |

15k difference. 15/42 = 35.7% difference. Americans produce more than 1/3 more than Canadians. Thus Canada is a shit hole on par with backward parts of the US like Louisiana and Mississippi. A few government programs will never make up for a 35% difference in $$$$. |
