There are two recognisable types of Retriever. The slimmer, more athletic type is generally bred to work and should be a fit and agile dog. The other type is a slightly shorter, heavier dog favoured for showing. Bear this in mind when choosing your breeder and looking at the parents. Too much weight is harmful to a dog and prevents him having a good quality of life. Weighty dogs are also more prone to hip dysplasia. |

They pissed the hell out of my dog, who wanted to bite the crap out of them. The owner stopped me from intervening, saying that if they got pwn3d they would deserve it and might learn a lesson. Somehow, working together they avoided it. Just as she reached one dog, the other would nip her from behind and run away. Mind you, my dog outweighed both put together so they were taking their lives in their hands. The owner couldn't care less and thought it was hilarious.
They were both rescues off farms that couldn't deal with them. 1 was a chicken killer, the other didn't want to live outside with the animals. |

The German Shepherd Dog is also a breed that is routinely mentioned when people talk about ruined breeds; maybe because they used to be awesome. In Dogs of All Nations, the GSD is described as a medium-sized dog (25 kg /55 lb), this is a far cry from the angulated, barrel-chested, sloping back, ataxic, 85-pounders (38 kg) we are used to seeing in the conformation ring. There was a time when the GSD could clear a 2.5 meter (8.5 ft) wall; that time is long gone

She will growl, bark, nip, or stare down people who get too close to him. She does this even with people who have been around her and my roommate quite a bit (i.e., people she ought to know are not a danger). When he's not around, she's just timid and depressed.
Admittedly my roommate thinks it's because she's a rescue and was abused, has abandonment issues, etc. He also hasn't done a great job of training her. However, my cousin had a similar issue with a German Shepherd he took on as a support animal, and he ended up having to return it. So I think at least part of it stems from the breed itself. |

Also, don't forget that dysplasia isn't the only major issue. That GSD gait can be overdone and cause problems. Arthritis generally is another major issue (mine has it). So on and so forth. |

Huge, gorgeous dog that he took in after a family member got rid of him for being too nice. Yep, this dog didn't have a mean bone in his body. So he would warn all strangers to stay back and made a huge production about it. It worked and he never got robbed.
After he gets to know you he'll whisper that the dog is nice and that you can't tell anyone... My dog adored him. Finally died of old age at 12. |
