Curious about stories where you left within 1 year because the fit ended up being so poor. This is my biggest worry.

happens all the time. most laterals are on the way out the door at their old firms, otherwise why would they leave? so they're kinda desperate or not that good associates in the first place or dont like the shitty job and dont work that hard... and there's more pressure as a lateral unless they get dropped into a big group w/ no accountability, and they flame out pretty quickly.

I want to leave to get a fresh start. I used to be a great associate but completely fell apart after breaking up with the LTR that brought me to the city. Fell into a typical downward spiral for about a year or so after that that hasn’t really stopped. Started drinking alone. Performing poorly at work. Losing trust / damaging work relationships. Avoidance. More drinking to cope. I want to just tell someone that I’m all fucked up and need a legit sabbatical or something, but I’ve got $110k in loans left to pay down so I’ve continued limping along to collect my paycheck. But it feels wrong. I don’t like the feeling of “coasting.” I didn’t work this hard to get here just to be a cynical, depressed parasite.

Anyway. Hoping a clean slate will provide the kindling to get my motivation back. Will really suck to be wrong.

You don’t think it’s feasible to turn things around by, eg, lateraling to low COL home city where all your friends and family are? Maybe you’re right, but I guess I’m more optimistic.

You either have the passion for the practice of law in you or you don't. It's not something that's situational or contextual. There's a fundamental fiber in the universe that is either in or not in all of us. Some people only have it as a faint presence--they might sense a potential statutory inconsistency as they read the morning daily news, or muse about, for a passing moment, whether a new city regulation was artfully drafted or not. Those people are law sensitive but, at least without training, not truly of the law. Others have law levels so highly charged that, almost despite themselves, their minds are attuned to the scholarship and art of the law from the earliest of ages. Even in their raw form, such individuals are legal forces to be reckoned with. With training, they might rise to the level of being asked to join a deal team or strike force under the auspices of the legal order, assuming they can find a partner mentor to apprentice them. It is important to remember, however, that simply because one's legal level is high does not guarantee that that innate talent will be put to a good end. There are some in the world who are possessed with extraordinary levels of jurisprudential potency but who have chosen to direct that strength toward evil ends. The temptation toward this befouled relationship with the law grows stronger over time in the absence of proper training and discipline. These dark lawyers would, unimpeded, threaten the order of the world that we hold so dear. Thankfully, there are those other forces of legal good in the world, ancient and honed orders, who stand opposed to them, and so maintain the intrinsic balance of things. Tradition says that one day a young associate will arrive who will alter this balance and allow the good men of the law to once and for all prevail, bringing order to chaos.

i regret my inhouse move more than my lateral move. at my second firm i got away with murder because i worked for one aspie senior associate who inherited a book from a retiring rainmaker but he did almost everything himself in order to get hours up during his candidacy for partnership, then i recruited 2 URM juniors who did anything i said to show he could "build a practice". I billed <1k hours/yr for 2 years.

This is exactly why I left my firm. I liked the people but woke up one day as a fourth year and realized I had no idea how to actually be a lawyer. No arguing in court, barely any substantive filings, not even any depo experience. After a while, coasting for the paycheck doesn’t make up for the fact that you’re nothing more than a meaningless cog in the billing machine.

big paycut for what are ultimately the same hours more or less as my last firm.

you're right that you don't learn much substantively when coasting but most of it's flame anyway and you'll learn by doing on your next job, so long as you can sell your way through the interview with enough buzzwords and anecdotes

Kind of. Lateraling is difficult. Not the interviews, but integrating and sticking around. So much so that I’d caution against it unless you’re getting pushed out or are switching practice groups / locations / something similar.

No one, but you have to stick around long enough to land somewhere good. Lateraling after 2 years and flaming out at your second firm in under a year is a good way to fuck everything up.

All of the above plus none of the associates who have been with the firm since day 1 want to see you there. Why should they as they have carefully cultivated relationships with partners, worked their asses off, and then you show up from a firm ranked 10 places higher and are being taken out to lunch.
