i use a bar pretty much exclusively, aside from when i get my armpits and back (use a shower brush).
little outside the scope of your question but i have a very aspie shower routine:
chest/stomach/belly button -> crotch/balls/dick -> legs/feet -> armpits/arms/back -> neck/face -> hair -> taint/ass
i also leave the soap on my face while lathering the shampoo into my hair so i can rinse both at once, saves a little time.
then before i get out i do a quick smell check and make sure nothing smells like anything but soap (it never does, because im not a disgusting slob, but can't be too sure).
i've been doing this since about 5th grade, exactly the same way. i could probably upgrade the speed of washing my back and ass if i had a handheld showerhead, but it's not really a big deal. maybe 1-2 minutes time delta.

it might make a marginal difference. but idk about the details of the study (for instance, using soap might have just taken longer hence more exposure time to water, maybe applying the soap required more friction than just scrubbing with water, etc.). so even if the results are valid its unclear whether you could or couldn't duplicate the advantage of soap by just adjusting the wash friction/time.
