N20 engines failing at 50k, carbon buildup on all their diesels requiring thousands spent on “maintenance” to tear down half the engine and clean the junk out, major oil leaks, cooling system issues due to sps plastic parts. The list goes on and on.

German over-engineering (in the sense of redundancies, great fatigue strength, generous operational tolerances, parts specified in excess of the anticipated operational requirements etc.) was a thing until sometime in the 90s (exact timing depends on the brand) when they realized they had firmly established themselves as world-leading luxury brands and no longer needed to engineer actually superior products, at which point relative quality began to take a dive (accelerated by increasing expectations on margins). What they didn't scrub themselves of was the penchant to over-complicate the engineering work. Which brings you to the current day where you have a bunch of Rube-Goldbergian design problems in their vehicles coupled with planned obsolescence. But it doesn't matter to the companies because the brand positioning is firmly entrenched, for now.

i had an f30 i got rid of two years ago because it needed about $4,500 in "maintenance" once it hit 80k miles. fuck that. and you can't even get a remote starter on them, whereas lincoln and cadillac let you remote start your car from your smart phone. don't understand by bmw does not offer this as an option. call me a pussy but in a cold weather state its CR as fuck walking out to an already warm car.

I’m curious what “maintenance” items it needed? German makes are notorious for labeling design defects as “maintenance”.

it was a while ago now but i remember one item was a transmission fluid hose that cost like $1,100 (dealer said the cost was mostly labor since its hard to access). Gasket for oil filter housing was like another $1k. And $500 for spark plugs. Yeah.

German cars in the 80s were built like tanks down to their basic parts like struts and housings. They were the Toyotas of their day. That decade in particular is where the "meme" originated.

This is wrong. A model S is more expensive to fix after a crash (mostly due to aluminum body). But it's about half the cost in maintenance and repair compared to a 7 series or S class.

Your insurance is twice as expensive regardless of whether you get into a crash, and you're still on the hook if someone crashes into you, obviously.

And on the maintenance side you're basically a guinea pig, since we have no idea what the long-term maintenance costs will be or how these things will hold up after 100k miles, and since the maintenance costs are subsidized by Tesla burning cash, which is not sustainable.

Insurance rates are actually about the same for model S and 7-series and S class MB. But I would suggest model 3 Tesla anyway. Will be much higher volume and cheaper to repair. My insurance is the same as my 3 series BMW.

that's a really hideous car but it's MB counterpart (gle coupe) is selling like hotcakes in Asia for some reason. Asians (and their shitty aesthetics) have influenced these brands a lot in the last decade. All of the other MB crossovers (excluding the G wagon) are even uglier than the X6. The GLC suv looks like some amorphous piece of dogshit designed by a Taiwanese kid

I'd also have to figure something out with swapping out wheels because the tires available for the x6m are like 2x as expensive and last less than half as long. Plus, the 50i is really fast as it is. But the X6m comes with most of the features I want. For the 50i I'd need to spec it out with the dynamic handling package and some other stuff.

The big six was nearly indestructible.

I beat the snot out of a Bavaria and, other than a puff of smoke on decel from worn valve guides (or seals I have no idea as I did not care to fix it), the car was bulletproof. I bought it because it was cheap ($1500), rust free and needed a fender from an accident oh, and, you know, I was obsessed with frankenbav which almost won the targa Newfoundland.

I keep looking for a good 533i/535i/733i/735i with a manual but they have rusted to shit or are stupid money most of the time.

I would never buy one again. At one point we owned a BMW and MB and were paying $5-6k/yr in maintenance (independent shop for BMW, dealer for MB). The cost of ownership is absurd for typical suburban commuting and an occasional weekend trip. Every time I took the BMW in it was $2-3k for some shit, and there was still some active stabilizer bar or something that they told me not to bother fixing because it was an overcomplicated POS that would just break/leak again.

Your issues concerned an engine with known problems.

For whatever reason, BMW had huge issues with the new engines they introduced over a period of several years. With all of those engines, they introduced a revised engine package after a couple years that greatly improved reliability.

As best I can tell, BMW has always had a checkered history with respect to reliability of certain engine packages.

Anything from the gas turbo era is SPS. I would not touch anything made in the last 6-7 years as a result.

Merc

Merc 300D is the most reliable vehicle made, possibly ever.

The 55 AMG supercharged cars are good. I loved my G55. Had no issues, even the window regulators worked fine. The 6.2 NA AMG are ok with the $4k fix for head bolts or whatever it is that causes them to blow up.

The 320 were not terrible and the four bangers were not too bad either, but the best Mercs were always diesel at least prebluetec. CDIs are marginal. But the 96-99 or whatever E300 are highly under appreciated.

BMW

Normally aspirated 4 or 6 with a manual are generally good and reliable cars.

E46 auto trans are SPS as are E90. The motors are actually pretty good as noted above, but cooling systems and some gaskets need to be treated as wear items.

E36/E39 are pretty good, but good luck finding a good one these days. And lots of stupid and expensive shit to make right (headliner, suspension, stupid pixels).

The killers are subframe work on the 3 and Z cars (if you have a good one, the various patches are not too bad).

V8, V12 (god help you), BMWs and the 7 from 95 on are just terrible.

For BMW what you want is an early 90s 535i or 735i (manual if you can find it but lol at that — they did make the 7 in manual but I have been looking for a decade to find one worth buying and I have seen a total of two, both trashed) or just get an e36 or Z3 with a manual and a good subframe with no cracks.

You need to distinguish between a straight-6 and v-6. Turbo straight-6 engines are 180. They are very smooth and have excellent power bands.

I think the M3 topped out at 444hp with a six and the M2 is over 400 now.

So saying a straight 6 is not a performance engine is just wrong.

Merc abandoned the 6, but BMW stuck with it, Merc actually makes a straight 6 again.

The straight Six has really only one downside which is packaging. By necessity it is long, works like crap in front wheel drive form because it is long. The other issue, which is really not an issue anymore, is that you end up getting to inefficient piston size sooner than a V8. Anything over 5 liters in a six has that issue. The latter is the main reason why US car manufacturers relegated straight 6 to economy models (and ford came out with the V8 in the early 30s which set the market 8>6). Giant horsepower naturally aspirated straight six don’t really work like V8s do. One, they are strokers which limits rpm and two piston size. So Americans got 440s, 460s, 455, 454, even 472 and 500 cubic inch V8s in the muscle car era. And actually you could get an 8.1 liter (502 CI) V8 up until about 12 years ago.

But back to a six. A straight six (and a flat six like Porsche) is balanced through primary and secondary. That’s good not just for vibration but you don’t have to do fucktard stuff like a balance shaft and ends up with a very reliable design and one capable of insane hp if built. The 2JZ, the barra (which is derived from the ford straight six of the 60s), the RB nissans, are all very high hp tolerant designs. And things like the AMC/Jeep 4.2/4.0 (and Chevy and Ford sixes) are very durable. Even BMW (which use a different bearing arrangement) are good engines capable of a lot of hp. And they are silky smooth. Especially the big six. I mean, why do you thinks rolls and Bentley used straight Six way past when everyone else had gone to V8 (of course they eventually bought a GM medium duty V8 truck engine to use in their cars).

Anyway, get your turboed V8 or V6. I have nothing against that. Just understand the differences.

"I think the M3 topped out at 444hp with a six and the M2 is over 400 now."

Both are small cars, which was my point.

But look, it isn't that I'm saying there isn't a use case for them. My old Jeep Grand Cherokee had a straight 6 and wasn't a bad car.

Your blanket criticism of modern turbos is misplaced. They are significantly more reliable than older turbos, which rightly earned a horrible reputation. The combination of cooling turbos with the car's coolant system, rather than oil, and electric water pumps, which continue to run after a car is shutoff, results in significantly improved reliability.

As for direct injection, on the other hand, I still have my doubts.

What do you think the expected lifespan of an electric water pump is?

Turbos make direct injection worse.

And how about the rest of the tech in the cars?

Rust

Also really slow. And old. And not particularly nice. But I would not turn my nose up at a 325ix or M3.

Back when MB owned Chrysler Chrysler was losing money and MB compensated by using cheap parts in their MBs. My dad had one of these MBs and sold it 'cos every moving part in the car was going to end up being replaced.
